Twitter Hacks – A hacker allegedly hacked the Twitter accounts of a number of high-profile people, including Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Kanye West, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, were hacked. Tweets sent from these accounts asked people to send $1,000 worth of Bitcoins to a certain address — cryptoforhealth –and promised to send back $2,000 worth of Bitcoins, provided the funds were transferred within 30 minutes.
The tweet from Musk’s account noted,
“All Bitcoin sent to the address below will be sent back doubled! If you send $1000, I will send back $2000. Only doing this for 30 minutes. [the link]. Enjoy!” A similar tweet was posted from other accounts asking users to donate Bitcoin and get double in return. For now, there are no details on how many fell prey to the scam. Twitter is investigating the matter.
Within just four hours time the Bitcoin wallet promoted in the tweets received over $118,000 worth of Bitcoin by Wednesday evening. Most of that has already been transferred elsewhere through at least 300 transactions.
Twitter later confirmed in a series of tweets that the attack was caused by “a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.”
Twitter acknowledged the Twitter Hacks incident almost after an hour of silence and said, “We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly.”
